As we were discussing the topics Mrs. Smith would be sharing on Saturday, I heard "there is a balm in Gilead". Some of you may recall this as a song from Karen Clark-Sheard and however there is a scriptural reference in Jeremiah 8:22, it reads
"Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has not the [spiritual] health of the daughter of my people been restored?" AMP
Jeremiah was crying out to God because of the suffering of his people. He asked God to listen to the cry of his people in captivity who wondered if God was there. (v19). He was asking God to apply the balm in Gilead to heal their wounds.
Today, I believe we can identify with the suffering of these people and identify with Jeremiah wanting God to heal his love ones. Can we be transparent and say we too want to be healed mentally?
God has gifted people in our communities to pursue knowledge to help us like doctors and therapist, who undrerstand the uniqueness of our culture and identify. However because of the misconception and the lack of knowledge of mental health in our community, we suffer, see love ones struggle and ask does God care. Of course he does! We must let go of pride and seek help.
He - God, the Great Physician, has given us a balm to help in our healing process. We must learn to be ok with asking/seeking help to deal with our private mental moments or rip the labels off of being crazy, paranoid or a hot mess. Life hasn't been a walk in the park and has contributed to some of our mental struggles. Ignoring the obvious, sweeping it under the carpet and attempting to bandage what's broken. Without a reset it is not how we will be able to heal in order to become whole.
The Bible is clear "Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well." 3 John 3:1-2, Partnering with Holy Spirit and a gifted therapist is a start to a mental healing journey. Incorporating regular fellowship with non-toxic believers and spending time with God will help your relationship with God be even healthier.
Join Living a Kairos Moment and Soulful Success Couseling as we discuss Mental Health! "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
